Meet Silas and Melanie, Owners of Clean Air Mosquito Control Tucson

Silas and Melanie met in graduate school, where they both studied entomology and mosquito biology. Silas went on to serve 20 years in the U.S. Army as a medical entomologist, including overseas assignments developing ways to protect service members from mosquitoes in very different environments. He holds a PhD in Entomology, is a Board Certified Entomologist, and has published more than 50 research papers on mosquito biology and pest control.

Today they’re raising their two children in the Tucson area. The family loves hiking, gardening, growing native plants, and beekeeping, so protecting pollinators isn’t a talking point for them. It’s how they live.

Clean Air Mosquito Control is the sister brand of Clean Air Lawn Care, founded in Fort Collins, Colorado in 2006 and franchising since 2008. Silas also helps train Clean Air Mosquito Control owners across the country in mosquito biology, so the expertise behind your Tucson service shapes the whole program.

Mosquito Control Built for Tucson and the Sonoran Desert

Tucson gets only about 11 to 12 inches of rain a year, and roughly half of it falls during the summer monsoon. That burst of water fills plant saucers, pool covers, clogged gutters, and low spots almost overnight, and mosquitoes follow fast. Yards from the Catalina Foothills and Tanque Verde to Oro Valley and Dove Mountain in Marana also stay damp year round thanks to drip irrigation, misters, fountains, and pools.

The biter most Tucson homeowners complain about is Aedes aegypti, an invasive mosquito that lays eggs in small containers and bites during the day. Culex mosquitoes breed in stormwater basins, neglected pools, and pockets of water along the Rillito and Santa Cruz rivers after storms, and they’re most active from dusk through the night. That mix is why we pair targeted plant-based sprays with mosquito stations. Learn more about the mosquitoes and diseases found in Arizona.

Frequently Asked Questions About Natural Mosquito Control in Tucson

Why are there so many mosquitoes in Tucson?

Like other desert animals, mosquitoes are adapted to thrive here, and the typical backyard gives them exactly what they need: shade, irrigation, and small pockets of standing water. The invasive mosquito Aedes aegypti has moved into Tucson over the past two decades and is now the main daytime biter people complain about. It lays its eggs in plant saucers, buckets, toys, and other small containers, which is why it does so well around homes.

How long is mosquito season in Tucson?

Mosquito season runs most of the year in Tucson. Mosquitoes usually become active in late February or early March and stay active until late November, with populations peaking during the monsoon rains. Starting treatments before the monsoon arrives gives you the best control, because you knock populations down before they have a chance to explode.

Are there mosquito-borne diseases in the Tucson area?

Yes. Arizona has reported some of the highest West Nile virus case counts in the country in recent years, and the virus is spread by Culex mosquitoes, which are common in Tucson and bite from dusk through the night. St. Louis encephalitis is also found in the area and is spread by the same mosquitoes. Our treatments are designed to reduce mosquito numbers in your yard, not to prevent any illness. For health questions, talk with your doctor, and visit our mosquito-borne disease resource page to learn more.

Are natural products as effective as synthetic chemicals?

Yes, when they’re applied the right way and at the right time. Only a few classes of synthetic insecticides are registered for mosquitoes, and resistance to them is developing across the country. Plant-based products work on different target sites, so resistance is less of an issue. Our sprays use garlic extract and essential oils, and we focus them on the shady spots where mosquitoes rest instead of fogging your whole yard.

What are mosquito stations, and how do they work?

Mosquito stations, sometimes called mosquito traps or breeding buckets, give female mosquitoes a place to lay eggs. While there, they pick up a small amount of active ingredient and carry it to other breeding spots nearby, which stops the next generation from developing. Nothing is sprayed, the stations are enclosed, and bees and butterflies are left undisturbed. The stations are EPA-registered rather than plant-based, so we place them where kids and pets won’t play with them and keep them away from ponds, fountains, and streams, as the label directs. Most yards need 2 to 3 stations, results show up in about 3 to 4 weeks, and we check and refresh them every 3 to 4 weeks.

How often do you treat, and how fast does it work?

Our plant-based sprays start knocking down adult mosquitoes right away, and we recommend repeat visits every 3 to 4 weeks through mosquito season to keep numbers low. Mosquito stations work on the next generation, so you’ll usually see results in about 3 to 4 weeks. Planning a party, wedding, or other outdoor event? We also offer one-time event treatments.

Do you offer tick control in Tucson?

Yes. We treat the edges, ground cover, rock walls, and shady areas where ticks wait for a host, using plant-based products chosen with kids, pets, and pollinators in mind. In Arizona, brown dog ticks are the ones most often found around homes and dog areas. Tick treatments are usually monthly during the warm season, and you can add them to your mosquito plan.

What happens when I first contact you?

We know a mosquito problem can’t wait, so we’ll visit your property within 48 hours for a free estimate. Silas will walk your yard with you, find where mosquitoes are breeding and resting, and recommend a plan. If you’d like, we can do the first treatment the same day.
