Ticks aren’t evenly spread across a property. Research on residential yards consistently finds the large majority of them in shade and along the woodland edge, with very few in open mowed lawn. That means tick pressure is a border problem, and it’s why treatment order matters more than treatment volume.

Highest pressure: the woodland edge, unmaintained brush, and stone walls or woodpiles that hold both moisture and rodents.

Moderate pressure: ornamental plantings, groundcover, and mulch beds along the foundation, especially on the shaded side of the house.

Lowest pressure: open, sunny, regularly mowed lawn. Ticks dry out fast in direct sun.

Tick Behavior 101

A tick isn’t an insect. It’s an arachnid, closer to a spider, and it moves through four life stages: egg, larva, nymph, and adult. Each stage after hatching needs one blood meal before it can move to the next, which is why a single blacklegged tick can take two years to finish its life cycle.

Size is the part most people get wrong. A nymph is roughly the size of a poppy seed and an adult is closer to a sesame seed. Nymphs are the stage most often found on people, largely because they’re small enough to go unnoticed for days.

Ticks find a host by questing. They climb to the tip of a grass blade or leaf, hold their front legs out, and wait for something to brush past. Once attached, a tick can stay in place for several days if nobody finds it.
